Moonshine is a high proof whiskey often made in the hills of the Appalachian Mountains. This southern delight is any illegally distilled alcohol and is traditionally manufactured by moonlight hence the name: Moonshine.

Made from simple ingredients like yeast, sugar and corn, this is a non-aged whiskey with an alcohol content of 190 proof or higher. While it may be extremely flammable, frequent drinkers would still say it’s extremely delicious.

So how is made? (Please note, this is informational and by no means meant to encourage anyone to open a basement distillery)

Basic Ingredients: Corn Meal, Sugar, Water, Yeast, Malt

Process:

1.)  Mix all ingredients together into a large container, creating a “mash.” Move mixture into a still and let ferment.
2.)  Heat Mash, creating vaporization (173° F.)  The mash will create a clear but dark liquid.
3.)  Trap vapor using a tube or coil.  The vapor will transfer into the second container– this condensation is moonshine.

Simple as apple pie!
(See what I did there? Apple pie is a common flavor of Moonshine! Haha!)

Moonshiners is back on Discovery! I can’t even call this one a guilty pleasure because I love this show so much. Maybe it’s because I live in Tennessee. Maybe I have been forced to listen to “Rocky Top” one time too many. I have a huge appreciation for the Appalachia tradition of making moonshine. When I see a mason jar at a social outing I get excited.  Have you ever wondered how moonshine was made? Be sure to check out season two Wednesday night’s @ 10PM EST!
